In Part 1 of the Step-By-Step How to Build a Pickleball Court blog series, you learned about slope and grade, cut, and fill excavating, as well as foundation construction, turndown beams, post tension cables, concrete work, and more. Now that the concrete has been poured, in this blog we will walk you through the rest of the process, from concrete curing to finishing touches, and offer some insights into the costs and court component options involved.
Project Overview
Depending on the chosen surface, most projects require patience and precision. After pouring the concrete, we wait up to 45 days for it to cure before starting the surfacing process. The average wait time for concrete to cure is about 30 days. During this waiting period, we install the fencing, lights, basketball goal, and net system. After assessing the court layout, and working with the customer, we install additional section of fencing for reinforcement and safety when needed.

Lighting:
Adding lighting to an outdoor court can be challenging in a neighborhood. This addition often requires confirmation of the city code and could require the approval of an HOA or council. For this project we installed two LED lights with 24,000 lumens each, ensuring excellent visibility for night play. The lights are spaced fifteen feet off the center of the court for even coverage.
- Lighting helps to extend the game.
Our light systems extend your playing time. Our single and double headed lighting solutions let you play a set of tennis or game of one-on-one well after the sun goes down.

- Energy efficient
Upgraded LED light systems save energy and provide better lighting control.
Ball Containment Fencing
Keep the fun on the court with Ball Containment Fence. We typically use a soft netting material, rather than chain-link or other rigid fencing, for increased safety and ball rebound. Properly installed and maintained nylon fencing is durable and can last over 20 years. Ball Containment Fencing can be easily customized to fit any court configuration and to enclose all or just part of the court. It uses high quality, black steel net posts and durable black netting, which not only keeps balls in play, but also gives the court added appeal. Fencing is essential for safety, especially with significant drop-offs that create fall hazards or when the court surface is elevated more than 6-8″ off the surrounding ground (common in yards with significant slope) around the court. Ball Containment also prevents home and landscape damage caused by runaway sports equipment. Plus, you spend more time playing shots instead of chasing the ball!
Surface Choices
There are several options to choose from when deciding on the perfect Pickleball surface for your court.
Options include:
– Cushioned Acrylic
– Modular Cushioned Surfaces
– Rolled Surfaces (for indoor use only)
Our expert CourtBuilders™ do not recommend turf, grass, clay, raw concrete, or raw asphalt.
Understanding the costs involved is crucial for planning your own court. Here is a general walkthrough of how much it costs to build a multi-sport pickleball court between 1,800 and 2,200 sq ft. Costs vary based on factors and site development/project requirements.
In total, one can expect to spend between $20 and $35 per square foot for a multi-purpose court.
